Kimchi is a national Korean dish consisting of fermented chili peppers and vegetables, usually based on cabbage.

Common ingredients include cabbage, radish, garlic, red pepper, onion, ginger, salt, and sugar.

According to a 2014 report published in the Journal of Medicinal Foods, the fermentative byproducts formed during fermentation and the functional ingredients used to make kimchi significantly boost its benefits because these are responsible for forming the probiotics. The World Health Organization defines probiotics as “live organisms which when administered in adequate amounts confer a health benefit on the host.
