Shorobor Udhya

In some rural corners of Bangladesh, we observe an excellent practice upholding the true spirit of Eid. People, who have the capacity to sacrifice, bring a portion of their meat in a common place. Then, centrally the village people divide all the meats to the poor.

But this picture is not mainstream. In many villages, people sell the cow they reared for a year with compassion. The money is used to pay loans of the rice; or, something similar. Beef is expensive. From 2011 to 2017, beef prices have hiked more than 63%. In 2016 the price stands at an average of 500 taka per kg, more than 6 USD/kg. Mutton is dream—750 taka per kg.

While we might enjoy a nice steak in this Eid, there are people who would miss their only chance to taste beef in the whole year.

Shorobor, as a part of its social business, has taken the initiative to sell shares of cows and whole goat/sheep to people who enjoy the blessing of financial freedom from Allah and thereby can afford to buy meat year around.

Our target is to sacrifice 50 cows and 50 goats and distribute the meat to poor people of 19 poverty ridden districts of Bangladesh.

The districts are Lalmonirhat, Kurigram, Nilfamari, Dinajpur, Rangpur, Gaibandha, Shirajganj, Rajshahi, Chapainawabganj, Mymenshing, Kishorganj, Faridpur, Kushtia, Barishal, Chandpur, Khulna, Bandarban, Khagrachori, Rangamati etc.

Why have we taken this project?

Firstly, Udhya or Qurban is an important act of worship.

فَصَلِّ لِرَبِّكَ وَانْحَرْ

Therefore turn in prayer to Your Lord and sacrifice (to Him only). [108:2]

Secondly, not offering a sacrifice is highly disliked. Rasul sallalahu alaihi wa sallam said,

It was narrated from al-Baraa’ ibn ‘Aazib (may Allaah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said:

“Whoever offers a sacrifice after the prayer has completed his rituals (of Eid) and has followed the way of the Muslims.”
[Narrated by al-Bukhari, 5545]

Many scholars favored the view that Udhya is wajib including Imam Abu Haneefah and Imam Ibn Taymiyyah.

Thirdly, Eid means joy and Eid ul Adha is the happiness when we feed others.

” Then eat thereof and feed therewith the poor who have a very hard time” [22:28]

There are many who can taste meat once in a year.

Fourthly, although the beggars are entitled to get meat, we want to discourage begging as a profession which often results in selling the sacrificed meats in the market.

We strongly encourage giving udhya with one’s own hands, remembering the name of Allah over the animal and distributing the meat to the poor. But if there is anyone whose circumstances are preventing him from doing a Qurban, or giving meat to those in real need, we want him to join although only financially.

We will Insha Allah try our best to make sure that the shari’ah is not violated during any of our processes.

A share of cow would cost 7,000 taka and a goat/sheep would cost 8,000 taka. Those who want to join us can buy from our page directly.

May Allah enable us to sacrifice for only his sake from our halal earning.
