A Guide for

Buying Blankets

in Bangladesh

Bangladesh is a country of moderate climate, temperatures ranging between 30°C and 40°C. But in cold months average temperature for most of the country is about 10°C.

The northern impoverished regions of Bangladesh are usually affected by tough winters. Most homes hardly protect from the cold. Warm clothes are not abundant. Small children and the, elderly are vulnerable, often dying from pneumonia.

Many organizations, hence, opt for blanket distribution among the poor. A blanket is a large piece of woven cloth that keeps the user warm,  while sleeping or lying down.

This whitepaper aims to create awareness about the factors that should be considered before purchasing blankets for distribution among the poor.

Quality of blankets primarily depends on four parameters:

  1. Size
  2. Weight
  3. Elasticity
  4. Thermal Insulation

Size matters for blankets. Single sized blanket covers for one, a queen covers for two, while a king size blanket covers four persons. The international standard measures as follows:

  1. Single - 80X50
  2. Queen - 84X60
  3. King - 90X80

But the local products most often use their own length and width. The following table shows different sizes available in the local market:

Quality of fabric depends on a lot on weight. But in case of measuring the weight, one should be careful and measure weight in terms of unit area to get a better picture for comparison.

An indicator of blanket longevity is its elasticity. Measuring an area and then measuring the increase in area after applying force will give an increase in area, i.e. the capacity to stretch.  A good quality blanket will be neither too rigid nor too elastic.

Thermal Insulation:

The rate of temperature loss per minute will give the most important function of blankets - keeping the body warm. Good quality blankets will have high insulation while low-quality blankets will lose heat in a higher rate.

A simple experiment of wrapping the blankets around a hot water tube and then measuring the reduction in temperature in a given time will reveal the rate of heat loss in 0C/minute.

Shorobor is happy to offer assistance to all organizations or individuals regarding procurement of blankets.

Apart from our own production, we have ties with major suppliers and so can offer a price beat challenge, i.e. we will give the cheapest price in the country Insha Allah.

We will ensure that a lower quality product will not be shipped, which many traders do taking the advantage of bulk shipment as it is impossible for buyers to check quality individually. Many times the blankets delivered are not same as the sample shown.

Shorobor has got samples from the market as well as our own products in Shorobor office, Nabinagar Housing, Muhammadpur, Dhaka.
